In anticipation of his upcoming book, Fair Game, scheduled for release in August 2026, P3 Adaptive CEO Rob Collie has outlined a strategy for businesses to move past generic chatbot subscriptions. Drawing on his experience as a former Microsoft engineering leader and author of three previous books with over 92,000 copies sold, Collie argues that off-the-shelf artificial intelligence lacks the proprietary context required to solve specific enterprise problems. Instead, he advocates for businesses to build tailored systems that integrate their own data, rules, and terminology.

For practitioners, this shift relies on what Collie calls Crafters, the estimated one in 16 knowledge workers who possess a natural aptitude for solving problems with tools like spreadsheets and Power BI. Rather than relying solely on traditional software developers, Collie suggests that these data-savvy professionals are best positioned to lead internal AI projects because they already understand operational nuances. Under this model, professional developers step in as complexity, reusability, and data sensitivity increase, creating a collaborative pipeline where IT and security teams establish guardrails rather than acting as gatekeepers.

To demonstrate the viability of this approach, Collie built a custom AI editor named Eddie to assist in writing his manuscript. By feeding Eddie his specific writing style and rules, Collie created a specialized assistant that could track narrative promises across chapters. He advises companies to adopt a similar faucets first methodology, which focuses on delivering immediate value through a single, specific use case rather than waiting to build a perfect, centralized data estate. This approach allows organizations to replace traditional, static dashboards with interactive data agents that can answer natural-language business queries in real time.
